Mineral spirits are also known as Stoddard spirits, Varnolene, Texaco spirits or white spirits and they are commonly used as paint solvents or thinners. These paint thinners are organic solvents that are used in painting and decorating.

What is this solvent made of?
These industrial solvents are a mixture of saturated aliphatic and alicycilc hydrocarbosn that have a maximum content of 25% of C7 to C12 alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons. They are specifically manufactured to suit the dry cleaning industry. These industrial solvents have a specific mixture of hydrocarbons that are typically > 65% C10 or higher hydrocarbons.

Who invented it?
These spirits were invented by W. J. Stoddard in the year 1928 to help him in his dry cleaning business. The liquid was able to remove most of the debris present on the cloth and still retain the original colors of the cloth. Stoddard solvent remained the most popular cleaning solvent in America and it is still used in many dry cleaners to clean clothes.

How to use these industrial solvents?
Paint professional use these solvents as an alternative to turpentine for painting and for polishing wood. These solvents are also commonly used to remove paint remnants from paint brushes, to remove mistakes while painting or to use as a degreaser. As these materials are far cheaper than turpentine, they are preferred for use in the paint industry, dry cleaning industry and as a paint thinner. Here is how you can use the material while preparing wood.

Step 1- Wash the wood surface so that the wood surface is clean for applying these industrial solvents on the surface.

Step 2 – Apply the cleaner to the surface. The material will take a few minutes to start working. Use protective masks, gloves and spill cloths to catch the excess. Rub the surface of the table with the material and remove any excess paint from it. The cloth will get dirty as you rub these industrial solvents into the furniture.

Step no 3 – Wipe the furniture or piece down to remove the excess liquid. Wait for it to dry and then wipe down again to remove any lingering remnants. Ensure that all the thinner dries off of the paint will not adhere to the wet surface.

Step no 4 – The wood surface can then be painted with the paint variety that you want. Any extra tags and spills can be removed with the use of the solvent.

Precautions to be followed when handling these industrial solvents
These industrial solvents are to be used in well ventilated areas away from any heat or fire sources. Make sure you use rubber gloves that will keep these industrial solvents away from your skin. Keep special rags that will soak up the extra spirits and prevent them from spilling on painted or polished surfaces. Cover the bottle of spirits so that the it does not evaporate and store it in open areas that will allow any leaked spirits to evaporate Please note that inhaling the material will result in narcotic effects like unconsciousness, dizziness and breathlessness. Allergic reactions are also common in the form of allergic dermatitis, eczema and skin peeling and burning sensations.
